Dark Life by Kat Falls

Sixteen-year-old Ty, first child born to the pioneers who live in the depths of the ocean, has little patience for topsiders (land dwellers) until he meets feisty Gemma, who immediately enlists his help to locate her missing older brother. Their search is interrupted by pirate attacks of the notorious Seablite Gang and an ultimatum from the Commonwealth Government (located topside) that makes the pioneers responsible for stopping the raids. Ty and Gemma uncover connections between the pirates, illicit medical experiments, and Gemma’s missing sibling, who happens to have secret supernatural gifts—like Ty. Although set in an undersea future, this rousing adventure has all the hallmarks of a western, including outlaws, homesteaders, and plenty of shoot-’em-up action (only with harpoonlike weapons). Good guys and bad guys are fairly obvious, as is the outcome, but the exotic setting and well-conceived details about undersea living, along with likable characters and a minor surprise at the end, will keep readers turning the pages. Supermoon Lunar Eclipse happening Sunday, 2015!

It almost sounds like something from a comic strip: a total supermoon lunar eclipse, also known as a blood moon. But this is for real and it’s happening Sunday, Sept. 27th,  2015 through Monday.
What’s actually happening is a result of three things.  The moon will be full and in its closet point in its orbit around the Earth, making it a so-called supermoon.  Supermoons appear 14% larger and 33% brighter than other full moons.  It can be viewed in Seattle on Sunday, September 27, 2015 at 5:11 p.m. but will be brightest at 7:47 PM.  Here is the timetable:

Event UTC Time Time in Seattle* Visible in Seattle
Penumbral Eclipse begins Sep 28 at 12:11:47 AM Sep 27 at 5:11:47 PM No, below horizon
Partial Eclipse begins Sep 28 at 1:07:13 AM Sep 27 at 6:07:13 PM No, below horizon
Full Eclipse begins Sep 28 at 2:11:12 AM Sep 27 at 7:11:12 PM Yes
Maximum Eclipse Sep 28 at 2:47:09 AM Sep 27 at 7:47:09 PM Yes
Full Eclipse ends Sep 28 at 3:23:05 AM Sep 27 at 8:23:05 PM Yes
Partial Eclipse ends Sep 28 at 4:27:05 AM Sep 27 at 9:27:05 PM Yes
Penumbral Eclipse ends Sep 28 at 5:22:31 AM Sep 27 at 10:22:31 PM Yes

* The Moon is below the horizon in Seattle some of the time, so that part of the eclipse is not visible.
The lunar combination is happenings for the first time in 30 years and the next on occurs in 2033.

All this space talk reminded me of one of my favorite picture books, Alistair in Outerspace.

Another favorite chapter books is George’s Secret Key to the Universe.

So I thought I’d quickly highlight some of the other great space books in our most amazing library!

Cosmic by Frank Cottrell Boyce: Student Review by Samantha H.

Cosmic is about a 12 year old boy named Liam that is over 6 feet tall and has a beard. When he is mistaken as a dad and gets chosen to go to the worlds biggest ride, he decides to lie to his parents and go. He brings his classmate Florida to act as his daughter. When they arrive, they find out that the ride is a rocket in a secret location in china! When they finally reach the moon, they became the first kids to go to the moon, with some other kids. Right when things were going great, someone presses the wrong buttons and gets them all lost in space. Will Liam save the day? or just kill them all in space? I guess you’ll just have to find out yourself.

Found by Margaret Haddix Peterson: Student Review by Sarah

This book is about a 12 or 13 year old kid whose name is Jonah. Jonah  knew he was adopted, but his friend Chip did not know that he was adopted! They started to receive weird letters from people that they didn’t know because they didn’t have any return adress.  Jonah and Chip started to get mysterious about their real identities and where they came from. But, when they try to find out who they are the FBI would not let them know anything about themselves!  I WISH THAT I COULD SAY MORE BUT IF I DO I WILL SPILL THE BEANS! So instead why don’t you read the book yourself.

The True Meaning of Smekday by Adam Rex

Cover imageWhen twelve-year-old Gratuity (“Tip”) Tucci is assigned to write five pages on “The True Meaning of Smekday” for the National Time Capsule contest, she’s not sure where to begin. When her mom started telling everyone about the messages aliens were sending through a mole on the back of her neck? Maybe on Christmas Eve, when huge, bizarre spaceships descended on the Earth and the aliens – called Boov – abducted her mother? Or when the Boov declared Earth a colony, renamed it “Smekland” (in honor of glorious Captain Smek), and forced all Americans to relocate to Florida via rocketpod? In any case, Gratuity’s story is much, much bigger than the assignment. It involves her unlikely friendship with a renegade Boov mechanic named J.Lo.; a futile journey south to find Gratuity’s mother at the Happy Mouse Kingdom; a cross-country road trip in a hovercar called Slushious; and an outrageous plan to save the Earth from yet another alien invasion.–library catalog

Here’s a little video tutorial created by the Boov to help teach us humans how our holidays have changed since the alien invasion.
