Remembering our Veterans

Veterans Day was first called Armistice Day which began after World War I ended on November 11, 1918. Veterans are men and women who were in the armed forces- the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or Coast Guard. Veterans worked hard to keep our country a safe place to live. On Veterans Day Americans show that they are thankful for these men and women. At 11 o’clock in the morning on November 11, many people stay silent for two minutes. They remember those people who died to help protect our country. The President of the United States places a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery on Veterans Day. This wreath honors all men and women who lost their lives in wars.
The Wall, by Eve Bunting, is the story of a boy and his father who come from far away to visit the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington and find the names of the boy’s grandfather who was killed in the conflict.
